Background.

It's May 19, 2009 and I'm one day away from turning 36 and starting my newest adventure: Learning to surf. First, a bit of background:

I'm 36 years old, married, with two boys. I pay the bills by practicing law in one of the greatest places to live: San Diego, California. For the most part, I handle labor and employment law related issues on behalf of management.

That's the last time that I will talk about my job.

I'd like to use this space to write about learning to surf. There are plenty of blogs and websites that will teach you about surfing. This blog will explain what it is like to learn.

In terms of my prior background with surfing - it is almost nothing. In August 2008, I spent a couple days in Puntabanda, Mexico. On one of the days, I used a surfboard that came with the house we rented. I wouldn't call what I did surfing. Other than that my only background with surfing is reading West of Jesus, and Tapping the Source. Two great books, but I'd hardly say that I'm extensively prepared.

(View from the rental in Mexico) (My first time attempting to surf).
I've got some basic equipment already. 1) A Wave Storm 8 ft soft surfboard from Costco ($100) (No comments from the haters - I've got a mortgage and can't afford to spend the equivalent of a car payment on a hobby that I may or may not be able to stay with), 2) A Quintana Roo wetsuit from my Triathlon days (2004 Accenture Triathlon in Chicago - Lake Michigan is freezing for most of the training season), and 3) scuba diving boots (I may wear them when it gets colder).

I'll be taking lessons at Surfari Surf School http://www.surfarisurf.com/. New post tomorrow if I don't drown.
